Each year a well-known Canadian entrepreneur delivers an inspirational and thought-provoking speech at the Gala Dinner held in Ottawa’s historic Chateau Laurier hotel. Over the course of the meal, the audience is introduced to each Finalist team and views each team’s elevator pitch. At the end of the evening, The National Nicol Awardthe “Nicol”is presented to the Winning Team.

2010 Keynote Speaker: Richard L’Abbé, Co-Founder and former CEO of Med-Eng Systems Inc.
Richard L’Abbé is a current member of the Board of Governors at the University of Ottawa, and former graduate. He co-founded Med-Eng Systems in 1981, two years after graduating from Mechanical Engineering. Med-Eng Systems became a world recognized leader in the design and production of suits, helmets and electronic products to protect first responders against explosive devices.
Under his leadership, Med-Eng Systems won numerous awards including Canada’s Top 50 Best Managed Private Company Platinum status. In 2004, Mr. L’Abbé was named the Ottawa Business Journal’s CEO of the year. In 2008, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Canada’s Venture Capital & Private Equity Association.
Med-Eng Systems was successfully sold in 2007.
