Carleton University

1st Prize - Inovatrax

Henry Tang and Saman Raza have won the 2005 Nicol Entrepreneurial Awards, and the top prize of $6,000. Henry is in his final year of Computer Systems Engineering at Carleton. Saman is in her final year of Arts. Their company, Invotrax, was incorporated in 2004 to position itself as a leader in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) solutions. Invotrax is preparing the roll-out of its first product, the Digital Clothing Assistant (DCA). The DCA serves as a personal clothing assistant for retail customers, and a data mining tool for retailers.

2005 was the third time in the competition for Henry. He was on the third place team, iDash, in 2003. Last year he was on a team with an RFID based opportunity that did not make the finals. Perseverance is an important characteristic of successful entrepreneurs. Sam brings significant retail experience to the team - key to their first vertical target market. Invotrax' well developed customer relationship with Buffalo Jeans was an important factor for the judges.

This year's competition is the fifth under its current format, coordinated by Professor John Callahan of the Sprott School. "Invotrax is probably the best, most mature team that the competition has recognized," said Callahan. "They will be excellent Carleton representatives going to the national Nicol Entrepreneurial Awards competition. If some other team beats them there, they are going to have to be very good."

2nd Prize - MekTek

Second place went to a one man team - Mekki MacAulay Abdelwahab. Mekki is the founder of an operating company named MekTek. His opportunity is based on MEKS, a caching system that allows customers to reduce the amount of data they download from the Internet. MEKS creates a distributed cache based on a customer's network that downloads only information from the Internet that cannot be found on the network itself.

Second place: Mekki MacAulay Abdelwahab

3rd Prize - Gripe

Third place went to Gripe, an audacious business opportunity presented by Tyler McGill and Chris Hatko. Gripe is a system which leverage's mobile phones to provide one-touch location based product and price comparisons to consumers everywhere.

Third place: Chris Hatko and Tyler McGill
